‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ Summer Reading Program begins with ‘Wizard of Oz’ kick-off event This year’s Summer Reading Program theme is “Color Our World,” and Bossard Library invites all interested children and their families to our kick-off event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7 at the library. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Wizard of Oz character. A costume contest will be held with prizes awarded for the most inventive costumes. Wolfe Mountain Entertainment will perform a Wizard of Oz show at 12 p.m. and again at 1:15 p.m. in the Riverside Room. Children of all ages can also enjoy “Bingo with Toto” and can create their own “Over the Rainbow” craft. Each family will receive a tornado tube to create a tornado experiment at home using a plastic bottle, while supplies last. Face painting will also be available and a photo booth with Wizard of Oz-themed props. Summer Reading Program sign-ups will begin on Monday, June 9 at the library. Children, tweens, and teens, from birth to 19 years old, are encouraged to register to earn prizes for reading through August 31. Children, from birth to 7 years old, are encouraged to read 30 books (or have books read to them), while tweens, ages 8-12, and teens, ages 13-19, should read 10 books to complete this year’s program. Books and audiobooks borrowed from Bossard Library or borrowed from the library’s digital services through hoopla or the Ohio Digital Library (via the Libby app) count toward the Summer Reading Program. Trivia Night Ages 13 and over Come out for Trivia Night and compete as an individual or play with your friends to test your knowledge of current events, history, pop culture, and more! Trivia Night is open to teens, adults, and families with children who are age 13 and over. The winning individual or team will receive a nominal prize and bragging rights! Light refreshments will be provided. Youth Services Programs Adult Programs Teen Book Club Ages 13-18 The Teen Book Club will meet in June to discuss Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers by Deborah Heiligman. The teens will enjoy completing their own “starry night” painting. Copies of the book can be borrowed from the library. The eBook and digital audiobook can be borrowed from hoopla or the Ohio Digital Library via the Libby app. The Teen Book Club meets every other month at the library and is for any interested reader, ages 13-19. Permission form required. Local poet Rodney Roberts will discuss his poetry and creative process on Sunday, June 1. His latest collection is entitled The Beginning of Life. A questionand-answer session will follow the presentation. Signed copies of Roberts’ books will be available for purchase. His three collections of poetry can also be borrowed from the library. Author Talk & Book Signing Bright Star Theatre Bright Star Theatre will return this year with a performance of Peter Pan in the Riverside Room. This classic will be brought to life with favorite characters, including Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, and the freespirited Peter. The performance will be targeted at children, grades pre-K to grade five, but can be enjoyed by all ages. This program is supported by the State Library of Ohio with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. In-B-Tween Club Ages 7-9 The first In-B-Tween Club meeting in June will feature a reading of The Wizard of Oz: The Official Picture Book adapted by JaNay Brown-Wood, illustrated by Pablo Pino. Attendees will complete a rainbow craft and get to play a “melt the witch” game. The second In-B-Tween Club meeting will feature a reading of Vincent Can’t Sleep: Van Gogh Paints the Night Sky by Barb Rosenstock, illustrated by Mary GrandPré. Attendees will get to complete oil pastel artwork. Evening Storytime Ages 3-6 Evening storytime on June 12 will feature a “Buzzing into Summer” theme, while, on June 26, attendees will enjoy a reading of The Firefly With No Glow by Rebecca Smallberg, illustrated by Jessica Gibson. Evening storytime is for children, ages 3-6, and is typically held twice per month at the library.
French City Writers’ Guild Ages 18 and over Both budding and experienced writers are encouraged to stop by the library to attend the monthly meeting of the French City Writers’ Guild. Writers are encouraged to discuss their original works of various genres, including nonfiction, poetry, and genre fiction. Guild meetings are only for those age 18 and over. ‘Color Me Happy’ Adult Coloring Ages 18 and over Stop by the library to enjoy an adults-only coloring session. Coloring sheets and coloring gel pens/pencils will be provided or you can bring your own. Bring a friend and enjoy a relaxing coloring session and genial conversation. “Color Me Happy” is only for adults ages 18 and over. No children are permitted. Weekly Programs Storytime Ages 3-6 Join us each Monday morning for storytime. Each program features stories, songs, and crafts with an engaging theme for children. There will be no storytime on Monday, June 9. Families are encouraged to register their children for the Summer Reading Program. Yoga Ages 16 and over An hour-long Yoga session is held each Monday evening in the Riverside Room with a certified Yoga instructor. Please bring your own Yoga mat or beach towel and wear comfortable clothing. Waiver form required. Pat-a-Cake Lapsit Ages birth-3 The library presents stories, rhymes, and songs with fun and engaging themes for the youngest of readers and their parents or caregivers each Wednesday morning. Needlework Circle Ages 12 and over Anyone with an interest in fiber art is welcome and encouraged to attend Needlework Circle each Wednesday afternoon at the library. Anyone with an interest in learning to knit, crochet, or complete other fiber art is also encouraged to attend. ‘Game on!’ Game Day Saturday Ages 12 and over (under 12 with an adult) Bring a friend and stop by the library for Game Day. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own games or select a game from the library’s board game collection. Adult Book Club The Adult Book Club will discuss Vox by Christina Dalcher during its June meeting. Copies of the book can be borrowed from the library. The Music of the Civil War Ohio musician Steve Ball, who specializes in the music of the Civil War, will perform and discuss the music of this era beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 in the library’s Riverside Room. Ball, who is the current Department of Ohio Commander of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a member of the American Battlefield Trust, has performed and presented programs on Civil War music at the Ohio Statehouse, National Civil War Museum, and countless other venues. During the presentation, Ball will share some of the most popular tunes of the Civil War from both sides of the conflict. The music will be presented in chronological order and Ball will discuss the history of each song, as well as the corresponding events of the Civil War. A Holocaust story of survival Second generation survivor to discuss parents’ history Join us as we welcome Judy Ribak, Ph.D., on Saturday, June 14 in the library’s Riverside Room. Beginning at 2 p.m., Dr. Ribak will recount the story of her parents, Elliott and Ester Ribak, who both survived the Holocaust. According to the Holocaust and Humanity Center, Ribak’s parents, who were originally from Lithuania, were forced into the Kovno (Kaunas) Ghetto as newlyweds before being separated. Elliott was taken to Dachau and Ester to the Stutthof concentration camp. Both of Ribak’s parents miraculously survived and were later reunited in Italy. They immigrated to Dayton, Ohio, in 1950, where their daughter, Judy, was born. Dr. Ribak is a retired Professor Emerita from Wright State University. This program is free and open to anyone with an interest. ‘Color Your World in Song’ Cowgirl and musician Aspen Black will perform beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 26 in the Riverside Room and will present an interactive program for children and their families. Attendees will enjoy Black’s original songs about colors and artwork in celebration of this year’s Summer Reading Program theme: “Color Our World.” Children of all ages and their families are welcome and encouraged to attend. Local beekeeper Chris Blank will be on hand beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 27, in the Riverside Room to discuss local honey production and provide samples of honey for attendees to enjoy. Blank, who has been keeping bees since 2011, has numerous hives throughout the area and is the owner of Gallia Bees − a local small business that provides honey, beeswax products, and honey bees and queens. During this educational program, Blank will discuss the importance of local honey, as well as various aspects of honey production and beekeeping. This event is free and open to everyone.
