Lawson returns for poetry discussion and workshop Bossard Memorial Library will once again host Dr. Robert L. Lawson beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. Anyone with an interest in poetry or creative writing is welcomed and encouraged to attend this event. Lawson’s presentation will encourage creativity, originality, and experimentation in writers and speakers, while showing the importance of poetic delivery. Lawson, who previously spoke at Bossard Library in March 2019, is a retired educator who now works as an author and speaker in the field of self-development. He began his teaching career at Gallia Academy High School, and is a 1973 graduate of the University of Rio Grande, and 1978 graduate of Marshall University. He holds a doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lawson has authored 12 books, including Destined for Greatness: Getting the Results You Desire from Yourself and Others and Greatness Awaits: Putting Your Dreams into Action. During the presentation, Lawson will recite works from various poets, and also incorporate his own original poetry. After the presentation, Lawson will entertain audience questions. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase and have signed copies of Lawson’s books. Light refreshments will be provided. Library to host inaugural Pinewood Derby Day In honor of National Library Week, Bossard Library will host a Pinewood Derby Day on Saturday, April 13. Registered children and teens in kindergarten through grade 12, will have the opportunity to race pinewood derby cars. Public pinewood derby races will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue through noon. Scouts-only derby races will begin at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and observe the Pinewood Derby Day races. Light refreshments will be provided. Children who are registered for the public races will receive a pre-shaped car kit, paint, decals, and weights provided by the library. Derby car prep day will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 at the library. Pinewood derby races are a tradition in scouting that was first introduced in 1953 and has become a favorite activity among all branches of the scouts. Bossard Library is hosting this event during National Library Week to provide children of all ages, including those who do not participate in scouting, the opportunity to enjoy the fun and excitement of the pinewood derby. National Library Week will be held this year on April 713 and features the theme “Ready, Set, Library!” First sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958, National Library Week is observed by libraries across the country as a celebration of the pivotal role of libraries as community institutions of lifelong learning, opportunity, and exploration.
